How affirmations REALLY work

Many people have heard of affirmations and many more try to use affirmations in their daily lives to make things happen. However, it doesn’t always work for anyone.

In this video I have explained why affirmations don’t work and how you can turn that around. And in this blog I will explain more about how affirmations REALLY work for anything you want in your life.

What are affirmations:

Affirmations are sentences aimed to affect the conscious and the subconscious mind. The words composing the affirmation, automatically and involuntarily, bring up related mental images into the mind, which could inspire, energize and motivate. Repeating affirmations, and the resultant mental images, affect the subconscious mind, which in turn, influences the behavior, habits, actions and reactions.*

Now that you know what affirmations are we can start getting into the real talk! Reading the meaning affirmations sounds easy right? I know! However, it doesn’t work as easily as it sounds because there is something else that I believe is missing in the statement which is FEELINGS.

Well how DOES it work then and when can I get started?

First things first.

Step 1: Write down on a piece of paper what you truly want to manifest into your life. It can be a job, a partner, a nice holiday, a fitness goal, whatever you like!

Step 2: Think of all the positive things that you can say to yourself around this goal. For example I want to run a half marathon is the goal, then the affirmations that are matching with this goal would be

  • I am a healthy and energetic person
  • I can run a half marathon with full power and energy
  • I understand what it FEELS like to run a half marathon
  • I LOVE running a half marathon
  • I KNOW I can run a half marathon
  • My body understands when it FEELS like to run a half marathon
  • My body FEELS great
  • My health is improving each and everyday
  • I know how to train for a half marathon
  • I am ready to run a half marathon

These are some examples that you can use to match the picture you have in mind when you are working or reaching your goal.

Step 3: MEDITATE. I know not everyone “knows” how to do it, and I rather call it VISUALIZE than meditation because it is something different, but because many people understand the term meditation better I will use that now for now. When you sit and meditate for 10 to 15 minutes a day about your goal, you will start developing feelings of HOW IT FEELS LIKE to actually run a half marathon. You can FEEL that you are reaching the finish line, you can feel your body is healthy and strong, you can FEEL that you are runner. This is recommended every day before going to bed or before getting out of bed in the morning.

Step 4: Let go! what?? Let go??? YES! Let go of any attachment towards what you want. This will create space between you and your goal to develop en and for the process to happen. I know it is hard to let go of something you truly want. But trust me it is easier to go on with the right actions towards your goal and doing the things you want to do in your daily life, yet not thinking 24/7 about your goal. Give it space to develop and to come alive!

Step 5: Congratulations, you have reached your goal

Just a quick side note, if you really don’t understand why you are not getting what you want and you have been doing all the right things but it is just not coming to you, then I would say, it might be time to check you believe system (this subject will be on my blog soon), or it might not be for you and there is something greater out there!

3 Exercises without (almost) exercising

In addition to my video, I am sharing with you a few things that you can do so you will enjoy the present moment more and add meaning to your life.

1. When your energy is not aligned with the higher source (Universe, God, Spirit), you will feel very negative, sad, annoyed, irritated, and or angry. Sometimes the smallest things can trigger those feelings in us. To go back to your positive self, just stop what you are doing and take a couple of deep breaths. Close your eyes and say to yourself (loud or in silent) “Life IS beautiful, NOW!”, say it 3-5 times and open your eyes. Look at everything around you and realise the colours, the forms, shapes, sounds and relax.

2. This is what I like to do most of the time when I do not feel like I can be in the now because my mind cannot stop thinking. I would like to go for a run somewhere in nature, I have to at least be surrounded by water or trees (nature). I love getting everything out of my system that is negative with every step I take. But instead of running, you can go cycling, go for a drive or take a walk.

3. Read. Knit. Drink coffee/tea/juice. Eat something you really want. Play an instrument. Write. Draw. Sing. Whatever you enjoy doing, just do that for a little 30 min. Smile when you are doing it, be in the moment of what you are doing. Observe yourself and feel it! Feel that you are singing, hear your voice (whether nice or not, WHO CARES), feel the emotions that arise in you! You will feel much more relaxed and happy by the time you finish or stop.

Sometimes we feel it is difficult to be in the present moment because we think too much about past and future. But all that we have to realise is that NOW is the moment we are living in, and NOW needs all our attention. Whatever happened, already happened, and whatever is coming is already coming. When you are in the moment and you enjoy your life, the future will change, it will change for the better, because you have such positive vibration, IT’S THE LAW!

Attitude for gratitude

IMAGINE!!!

Someone asks you to get them a glass of water, and you get them a glass of water. They take it, drink it, and that’s it…

EXCUSE ME?! Can I get a THANK YOU please! But no, there is no thank you, no appreciation, no look back, just nothing. They even complain about the water, it’s not cold enough! And then they yell at you, GET ME A GLASS OF WATER!

How dare you ask me for another glass, you must have a lot of courage to do so! And you walk away, no glass of water for this person!

Do you know who that person is? The one that was yelling and complaining? That was YOU! And the person getting you a glass of water is the UNIVERSE. If you don’t show gratitude for what you have, who you are, where you are, what you do and your life, then you will NEVER experience ABUNDANCE.

Because if the person said, thank you for the glass of water, I really appreciate your effort and help. Thank you! I enjoyed this glass of water, can you please get me another one, a little bit colder this time please. YOU will happily get them another glass of water. Maybe even two, three or more! Just in case one is not cold enough.

Show gratitude towards the Universe, God*, Higher energies, The world, The people, ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING around you.

Monday Motivation

I arrived at work, said good morning to my colleagues and got myself a cup of coffee. It’s Monday morning again and you can see it on people’s faces. Oohh they look so happy (being sarcastic is one of my strong points). And as I was checking my mailbox I heard some of my colleagues talking about the re-organization. They might be the next to leave, so they were talking about what will happen and if they have a plan B.

One of them said, well I guess I have to start looking for a new job again, I don’t have a back-up plan… I do have a business plan of 24 years ago when I was still in University. ‘A BUSINESS PLAN THAT IS STILL THERE FOR 24 YEARS’ yelled my mind. What did it do for 24 years??? Were you waiting for the idea to jump out of the paper and start working for itself? Or was it fear that was holding you back… Maybe people told you how stupid your idea was. Or you were searching for security so you took a job at a company where you have been working for many many many years.

And I was right, in this situation, it was the “security” that he was looking for. Security? A secure job? Haha, please don’t make me laugh. I think it is even more SECURE to work out your dream than working for someone else. Because SOMEDAY, SOMEONE might (more or less WILL) kick you out of their company, because THEY don’t need you anymore for their dreams.

What a morning… again the universe is sending me signals, and words and people and circumstances where my faith and knowledge is being confirmed. Work on your dream UNTIL you live it, BECAUSE THIS IS YOUR LIFE.
